How to find local businesses without a zombie directory

Useful category hubs on this site are guidance pages — what to check, which registers exist, and how to list — not a roll-call of unverified names.

This is an independent local guide. It is not Manningham City Council, Nillumbik Shire Council, Parks Victoria, Visit Victoria, or any official tourism body.

Warrandyte’s commercial life clusters around Yarra Street, the bridge, and a scatter of home-based and highway-edge services across Manningham and Nillumbik. Visitors reasonably want to know where to sleep, who might print a flyer, or how a civil celebrant is actually authorised. The old warrandyte.com.au tried to answer that with a 2006 web directory. Those pages are not a safe citation in 2026.

This business hub is the strategy: keep useful category pages, strip the pretend inventory, and teach you how to look.

How do I find local businesses and accommodation?

Start with the question, not a brand name.

For food and drink specifically, use the separate eat and drink guide. It is also not a ranking.

What vanished on purpose

Named listings from old directories are not republished. People move, businesses close, phone numbers recycle, and copying a stale inventory would be a gift to scammers. If you remember a category, use the matching hub below. If there is no hub, use licences, consumer-affairs habits, and the open web — then contact only if you have a public URL to verify.

We also do not:

  • sell “featured placement”
  • quote prices
  • claim a business is the best in Warrandyte
  • paste testimonials

Practical verification habits

Before you hire or book:

  1. Confirm the physical catchment. “Warrandyte” in an ad may mean Park Orchards, Wonga Park, Templestowe or Eltham.
  2. Check the ABN and, where relevant, a licence (electrical, children’s services, marriage celebrant number).
  3. Read council planning or public-health pages if the activity is hospitality, events or land-use.
  4. For stays, ask the host how they handle Total Fire Ban days and access roads. This landscape is not a CBD hotel.

How to list a business

There is a direct FAQ on the contact page. Short version: email is not a listing. Send a verifiable public URL and the matching category. We may still keep the hub nameless if we cannot stand behind a claim.

If you arrived from an old bookmark, you are in the right neighbourhood. Choose a hub below rather than hunting for a trader ID that no longer exists.

A worked example

Suppose you want a bed, a bouquet, and a Saturday walk. A named list would go stale. A practical path is:

  1. Accommodation — understand fire-interface stays; book on a live channel.
  2. Florist — brief delivery to the correct council side; do not assume petals are allowed in a reserve.
  3. Walks — pick Pound Bend or Jumping Creek from Parks Victoria, not from a florist’s “romantic backdrop” copy.

If any of those steps fail a fire rating, the others should fail with them. A bouquet does not override CFA.

Categories we did not raise to a hub

Builders, bakeries, carports, child care, accounting — those trades exist in the catchment, and this index will not pretend we researched a current named market for each of them. Use licences, consumer-affairs habits, and the open web. If a category later earns a guidance hub, it will be because we can write rules-of-looking without an inventory, not because we found a sponsor.

Language we refuse

“Award-winning”, “best rated”, “exclusive”, “from $”, “open 7 days”, “the local identity says”. Those phrases are how directories rot. If a later verified mention ever happens, it will still avoid them.

Use contact for listing queries. Use 000 for emergencies. Use this index to pick a type of help, then leave.

Accommodation as a subset of business

Sleeping here is still a business-category problem with extra bushfire literacy. The dedicated accommodation hub exists because overnight stays concentrate risk: access roads, Total Fire Ban practice, and the temptation to treat a state park as a hotel garden. Day visitors can skip it. Overnight guests should not.

Frequently asked

What people always ask

How do I find local businesses and accommodation?
Use the category hubs on this site for orientation, then verify any trader on their own website, a current professional register, or the relevant council. This is not a live directory of named businesses and does not restore 2006 listings.
Why is there no named shop list?
This is category guidance, not a live directory. Old trader inventories are not restored. Verify any business on its own website, a current professional register, or the relevant council.
Will you add my shop by name?
Only if it can be verified from a public source you provide via the contact form. Even then, we may keep the page as category guidance rather than a featured listing.

Looking for a place to stay rather than a tradesperson?

The accommodation hub explains stay types around a bushfire-interface village without quoting rates.

Category guidance hubs

These pages explain how each category typically works in a riverside village. They are not a live directory and do not endorse named operators.
