Only 30 kilometres east of Melbourne, and hugging the meandering Yarra River, picturesque Warrandyte is not only a great place to live, but also the ideal destination for tourists and day-trippers. An appealing natural environment provides the perfect setting for an incredible range of experiences and facilities.
Treat yourself to a night or two at a quality local B & B. Then you can take your pick of restaurants, plant nurseries, art and crafts galleries, antique shops and museum, or choose from the array of unusual items at the local market (on the 1st Saturday of each month) and gift shops.
If you’re feeling more energetic, you can enjoy a round of golf, or follow one of the many bike or walking tracks through the bush. Perhaps you’d like to explore Warrandyte State Park, which is particularly impressive during the spring wildflower season.
Renowned for its painters and potters, Warrandyte has a rich and colourful history, with the area’s gullies and creeks producing Victoria’s first payable gold. In fact, gold mining played a vital part in the establishment of Warrandyte. If you’re a history buff, you might like to get a taste of the “golden days” by taking the Black Flat trail and visiting the Warrandyte Historical Society’s Museum in the Old Post Office in Yarra Street.
Whether you’re a local or a tourist, you’ll find plenty to see and do at the Warrandyte Village Festival, (held annually in March) and other fantastic events in the area. And don’t forget that Warrandyte is also a popular starting point for touring the nearby world-famous Yarra Valley wine district.
